ChatGPT Ads Account Name vs Brand Name vs Legal Name (and Multiple Ad Accounts)

Since 25 September 2026, ChatGPT Ads accounts have three separate names in Settings → General. What each controls, which changes pause your ads, how to rebrand without going dark, and how multiple ad accounts and the 10-account creation limit work.

ChatGPT Ads Account Name vs Brand Name vs Legal Name (and Multiple Ad Accounts)
Short answer. Since 25 September 2026, every ChatGPT Ads account has three separate names in Settings → General. The Account Name is internal — it only identifies the account inside Ads Manager, and changing it triggers no review. The Brand Name is the public name shown beside your ads in ChatGPT; changing it triggers brand review and pauses ad serving until the new name is approved. The Legal Name is your registered business name for billing and verification; changing it restarts business review and may pause serving. At signup, the one advertiser name you type fills all three.

Before this change, ChatGPT Ads had one name field doing three jobs: labelling the account for your team, telling ChatGPT users who the ad was from, and identifying the business that gets billed and verified. That worked until an agency wanted to label forty client accounts consistently, or a company advertised under a trading name that differed from its registered one, or a brand rebranded mid-quarter. Splitting the field fixes all three — and introduces one trap: two of the three edits can take your ads offline.

Sources. Behaviour described here is from OpenAI's Ads Manager Account Setup article, its Billing & Payment article, and its onboarding and policy troubleshooting guide. Scheduling and naming recommendations are our operating judgement and are labelled as such.

The mental model that keeps this straight: Account Name is a label, Brand Name is a promise to the user, Legal Name is a promise to OpenAI. Only the label is free to change.

How the three names are set when you sign up

OpenAI now offers two signup paths from ads.openai.com. Both end in the same place, and both use a single advertiser name to fill all three name fields.

Signup pathWhat happensWhere the names come from
Start with your website URLYou enter your site, Ads Manager uses it to help draft your first ad, you review the ad, build your first campaign from it, confirm the campaign, then create the advertiser accountThe advertiser name you enter becomes Account, Brand and Legal Name
Skip to Ads ManagerYou skip the website step, create the advertiser account, and build your first campaign whenever you are readySame default — one advertiser name fills all three

So at the moment of signup the question to ask is: which of the three names should this one field be? Our recommendation is to enter the name you want users to see, because the brand name is the one whose later change costs you delivery. Then, the same day, open Settings → General and set the Legal Name to your registered business name and the Account Name to your internal convention. OpenAI's own setup guidance says the same in shorter form: make sure your Brand Name represents how you want your business to appear in ads, and use your registered business name for Legal Name.

The other three fields you only get one shot at. While you are on the signup form, OpenAI asks you to review your country or region, currency and time zone — and those three cannot be changed after account creation. Names can be fixed later. Those cannot. See ChatGPT Ads countries for why they matter when you advertise in more than one market.

Accounts created before 25 September 2026 start with all three fields holding the same name. Nothing breaks, but it is worth opening Settings → General once to set each name deliberately rather than inheriting a single value that may not suit all three jobs.

What each change actually does

Changing the Account Name

Account Name changes affect only Ads Manager and do not trigger review. Rename as often as you like. Nothing a ChatGPT user sees changes, and nothing is paused.

Changing the Brand Name

A Brand Name change triggers brand review and pauses ad serving until the new name is approved. This is the edit that takes a live account dark. The pause is not a penalty; it is OpenAI confirming that the name now shown to users legitimately represents the business behind the ads.

OpenAI's policy guidance explains what reviewers are checking. Business verification can fail when OpenAI "could not verify the accuracy of your business identity, ownership, or affiliations", and a domain can be rejected when OpenAI "could not verify that your advertiser identity matches your provided domain." The practical reading: a new brand name that does not appear on your landing pages, your domain or your ads is the name most likely to be questioned.

Changing the Legal Name

A Legal Name change restarts business review and may pause ad serving. Business verification can take up to seven business days to complete, per OpenAI's troubleshooting guide. And because billing is tied to the legal entity, a legal name change that is really a change of entity — a different company, a different country — is not something the name field can solve. OpenAI's billing guidance is that billing country, currency and legal entity are tied to account setup and may not be self-serve editable, and that billing under a different entity may require a separate advertiser account.

How to rebrand without going dark

Everything in this section is our operating judgement. OpenAI does not publish brand review timelines.

  1. Make the new name true everywhere before you submit it. Landing pages, site header, footer, favicon, and the domain your ads point to should all show the new brand. A brand name that exists only in the Ads Manager field is the one that invites questions.
  2. Update the logo in the same session. The logo also lives in Settings → General. Submitting a new name beside an old logo is an avoidable mismatch.
  3. Change it in your quietest week, not during a launch or a sale. Serving pauses until approval, and approval time is not guaranteed.
  4. Refresh ad creative to match before or immediately after approval, so the ad copy and the brand shown beside it say the same thing.
  5. Watch the status tooltips. Campaigns, ad groups and ads show Not serving with an explanatory tooltip while the account is under review. That is the signal to check, not the spend line.
  6. If you also need a Legal Name change, do not stack them blindly. Two reviews at once means two things that can go wrong at once. Do the legal correction first in a quiet period, then the brand change.

Multiple ad accounts from one login, and the 10-account limit

The other half of the September account changes is how multiple advertisers are managed. OpenAI's model is simple: one advertiser account per advertiser, and one OpenAI login can belong to many of them. You switch between accounts you belong to without signing in again.

Creating an additional ad account

Eligible self-serve advertisers can now create additional accounts for their business directly:

  1. Sign in to Ads Manager with your existing OpenAI account.
  2. Select an existing eligible self-serve ad account that uses credit-card billing.
  3. Open the account menu and select Create account, when available.
  4. Follow the setup prompts and check the business and account details before submitting.
  5. Complete any required billing, verification and account-review steps for the new account.

OpenAI is explicit that "creating additional accounts does not bypass verification, account review, or other eligibility requirements." A second account is a second review.

How the 10-account creation limit works

Once you belong to 10 or more ad accounts, you cannot create another one yourself. The detail that trips people up is what counts: the limit considers every account you belong to, whether you created it or joined by invitation. It is not an allowance of ten creations on top of your memberships.

Your situationCan you create another account?
You belong to 9 accountsPossibly one more, if you meet the other requirements
You created 2 and were invited to 8No — you belong to 10
You belong to 14 accountsNo — but an admin of another account can still invite you
You belong to 4 accounts on invoice billingNot necessarily — creation needs an eligible self-serve credit-card account

It is a limit on creating accounts, not on membership. An agency operator who already belongs to fifteen client accounts can still be invited to a sixteenth through Settings → Users → Invite. The limit simply means the client, not the agency, should be the one creating it — which is how it should work anyway.

Why is Create account missing or blocked?

  • You already belong to 10 or more ad accounts.
  • The selected account is not an eligible self-serve credit-card account — for example, it is on invoice billing.
  • Your organization permissions do not allow it. If the error asks you to contact an organization administrator, that is a permission issue, not a limit.
  • You are signed in with the wrong OpenAI login.

If you belong to fewer than ten accounts and still cannot create one, OpenAI's guidance is to contact ads-support@openai.com with: the email you sign in with; the name and ID of the selected ad account; how many ad accounts you belong to, including invitations; whether Create account is missing or errors; the exact error text or a screenshot with date, time and time zone; and the organization shown in the setup flow if the issue concerns permissions. Never include passwords or card details.

A naming convention that scales

With Account Name now free to change and invisible to users, it can finally carry the information your team needs. This is the convention we use; it is ours, not OpenAI's.

{Brand} · {Market} · {Billing} · {Purpose}

Acme Skincare · US · Card · Prospecting
Acme Skincare · SG · Card · Launch
Acme Skincare · UK · Invoice · Always-on
  • Brand first, so accounts sort together in the switcher.
  • Market as an ISO country code, because each market with its own entity or currency is its own account.
  • Billing type, because it decides whether Create account is available from that account.
  • Purpose last, and optional — useful when one advertiser runs separate accounts for separate budgets or teams.

Keep the Brand Name as the clean consumer-facing name (Acme Skincare) and the Legal Name as the registered entity (Acme Skincare Pte. Ltd.). Three names, three jobs, none of them fighting.

Checklist: setting the three names correctly

  1. At signup, enter the name you want users to see as the advertiser name.
  2. Confirm country, currency and time zone before submitting — they are permanent.
  3. Open Settings → General the same day. Set Legal Name to your registered business name exactly as it appears on your incorporation and billing documents.
  4. Set Account Name to your internal convention.
  5. Confirm the logo and that the Brand Name matches your site and domain.
  6. Complete billing with a business name, address and card that match the legal entity and country.
  7. Invite teammates from Settings → Users as Admin, Member or Viewer — do not create extra accounts to give people access.

People Also Ask

Quick answers.

What is the difference between Account Name, Brand Name and Legal Name in ChatGPT Ads?

Account Name is the internal name you use to identify and manage the account inside Ads Manager. Brand Name is the public name shown alongside your ads in ChatGPT. Legal Name is your business's registered legal name, used for billing and business verification. All three live in Settings → General and have been separately editable since 25 September 2026.

Does changing my ChatGPT Ads brand name pause my ads?

Yes. A Brand Name change triggers brand review and pauses ad serving until the new name is approved. Make the new name visible on your site, domain and logo first, and change it during a quiet week.

Does changing my ChatGPT Ads account name trigger review?

No. Account Name changes affect only Ads Manager and do not trigger review or pause serving, because users never see the account name.

What happens if I change my legal name in ChatGPT Ads Manager?

A Legal Name change restarts business review and may pause ad serving. Business verification can take up to seven business days. If the change is really a different legal entity or country, you may need a separate advertiser account instead.

Which name is shown next to my ChatGPT ads?

The Brand Name. It is the public name shown alongside your ads in ChatGPT. Your Account Name and Legal Name are not shown to users.

Which name do I enter when I sign up for ChatGPT Ads?

You enter one advertiser name, and it initially fills Account Name, Brand Name and Legal Name. We recommend entering the name you want users to see, then setting the Legal Name and Account Name separately in Settings → General after the account is created.

Can I manage multiple ChatGPT Ads accounts with one login?

Yes. You can use the same OpenAI login to access every advertiser account you belong to and switch between them. OpenAI's guidance is to create a separate account for each advertiser.

How many ChatGPT Ads accounts can I create?

Once you belong to 10 or more ad accounts, you cannot create another yourself. The limit counts every account you belong to, including ones you joined by invitation. It limits creation, not membership — an admin of another account can still invite you.

Why is the Create account option missing in ChatGPT Ads Manager?

Usually because you already belong to 10 or more ad accounts, the selected account is not an eligible self-serve credit-card account, your organization permissions do not allow it, or you are signed in with the wrong OpenAI login. If none apply, contact ads-support@openai.com with your login email, account ID, account count and the exact error.

Can I change my ChatGPT Ads account's country, currency or time zone?

No. OpenAI states that country or region, currency and time zone cannot be changed after account creation, unlike the three names.

Do accounts created before September 2026 need to update their names?

They do not have to. Accounts created before 25 September 2026 start with the same name in all three fields. It is worth setting each deliberately in Settings → General, remembering that Brand and Legal Name edits trigger review.
